Magnolia Network's Clint Harp shuts his Waco store and website

harp design co

Clint Harp parked in the driveway of an abandoned house, took a deep breath, and started crying. Just four months earlier, he had quit his lucrative job in medical sales in Houston and moved his wife, Kelly, and three kids to Waco, all to pursue his passion of making furniture. Now, with no solid leads, no business coming in, and almost no money left, he was ready to abandon it all.

Harping On Harp Design Co

Over the years, we’ve been fortunate enough to partner with Chip and Joanna Gaines on Fixer Upper and the DIY network on shows including Wood Work and Against the Grain. Now, we are proud to be working with the Magnolia Network on Restoration Road with Clint Harp. It is a joy to be able to show you who we are and what we do, and if you’ve been following us for a while, we sincerely hope that you’ve enjoyed watching us grow as craftsmen and as a company.

About Harp Design Co.

Blending traditional techniques with modern technology, our family-practice integrates culture, trends, and research to profoundly capture your essence. And while he didn't love the job itself, he found he was naturally good at it. He was a people person — something he says he picked up from his father, who missed his own calling as a comedian.

Where Is Fixer Upper’s Clint Harp Now? Update on Carpenter After Closing Harp Design

He hated himself for being so Pollyanna in the first place. Based in Los Angeles, Hanna Li Interiors is a multidisciplinary interior design studio that specializes in high end residential work. Founded by siblings Hanna & Jeff, their passion is to create evocative spaces that truly express what the clients value, and how they want to live. We believe a home is rooted in everyone’s unique journeys — a place that enables you to live a longer, healthier, and happier life.

"You never know what those things you’re going through are for, or what they’re leading you to," he says. "It may lead to something even more difficult that then becomes something great — I don’t know. I would never have even been at that gas station if it weren’t for all these other things in my life." Harp said the company is not accepting any new table orders, but there are a few items left for sale online. He will also be signing crafted items from the company until the last day of operation. Outside of work, I love spending time with my wife and kids.

Cultivating togetherness is the heartbeat of everything we do. “She said, ‘I want you to know I don’t love you because of some feeling. And when we have to fight through stuff in our life, I choose to fight through those things with you.’ And I was like, ‘I’ve won the lottery,’” Clint told Country Living about his spouse in May 2018. Kelly designs handmade home goods for HDC, makes everyone in the Harp family look good, is a lover of just about anything on NPR, an avid reader, a coffee drinker, a foodie, and craves the beach every day. With a creative spirit, love for all things beautiful, and an eye for design, she is making HDC look better and better every day. And if there is ever a spare moment in her day, she’d prefer to spend it on a yoga mat.

Lifestyle

Harp, who rose to fame in 2013 on HGTV's "Fixer Upper," and his wife, Kelly, said Friday, Jan. 20 will be the company's last day of operation. Likewise, its website will shut down midnight the same day. Harp Design Co. will shutter its doors next Friday, and its website will close at midnight that day as well. "We’re a small business, and we’ve had to grow with the momentum of the show and try not to get kicked off this train." "This is bad. I need to go find a job," he remembers telling her.

Whether traveling, or hanging out at home- if I’m with my family, I’m happy. I love custom projects that allow me to make unique pieces even more. But, my favorite thing to do at Harp is to turn on the lathe- Bowls, bottles, candlesticks- anything on the lathe. Tour buses began circling Waco, passing his workshop and retail store on a near-hourly basis, and suddenly, he was getting stopped on the street. But while some design stars complain about the fame, Clint's psyched to have the chance to touch someone's life.

After a lot of thought and consideration, we decided to close to doors to Harp Design Co. As Creative Director, Hanna immersed her early training in furniture design at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where she apprenticed under industry masters. Hanna’s philosophy on interior design is grounded in both human emotions and visual impact — how a space looks is just as important as how it makes you feel. Harper & Bright Designs was founded in Los Angeles, California and was created to celebrate both living room and bedroom furniture and to help people design those spaces the way they should be with our inventories.

"Creating doesn’t just have to be furniture—it can be a TV show, a podcast, a book, or any other thing that might spark me," Harp said. "I like to try new things. So, that’s what I’m going to do." Harp said the decision came down to reaching their "limit" with obligations to other business ventures and raising a family. "After a lot of thought and consideration, we have decided it is time to close the doors to Harp Design Co.," the couple said.

As Fixer Upper became a ratings juggernaut, bringing in more than 2.1 million viewers an episode, Clint’s life hit warp speed. Orders went through the roof — and so did requests for him to speak at conferences and events. "These people want to produce a show with us and pitch it to HGTV," Joanna told him one day. He was all in — and before he knew it, he was a regular on the home renovation show. "I believe that wherever you can make connections, make connections, so I called him and left a message," Clint says.

"I was making six figures in Houston, and now we're broke. I wasn't selling any furniture." He said shutting the doors to the Waco location will give them a chance to devote time to other passions besides furniture. There are too many bands or groups to name- but, I’ve had a lifelong love for the Beatles- my dad introduced me to their music as a child, and it’s stuck with me. Though not a musical artist, I also love the poetry of Windell Berry. His writings make me appreciate natural beauty and working with my hands.

In the post, the two say they came to the decision after “a lot of thought and consideration,” and went on to thank everyone for their support over the years. That, above all else, is the one opportunity he won’t miss out on. If life’s taught him anything, it’s that you always make time for a trip to the park.

Clint and Kelly Harp, made famous by the HGTV show "Fixer Upper" made the "sad and difficult decision" letting fans and the community know why in a social media post. In addition, he wrote a book called Handcrafted and is the host of the “Man UnMade” podcast, which is working to “normalize the authority and power of women’s voices in a man’s ear,” per the show’s Instagram bio. His podcast has scored many high profile guests, including Laverne Cox, Suze Orman, chef Kristen Kish and more.

Massive blaze in downtown Los Angeles sends smoke billowing into the sky

Pierce County family reeling after a fire burned down their ‘dream house’.

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- An intense fire erupted at a rubbish yard and spread into commercial-residential buildings, sending a thick plume of smoke billowing into the sky in downtown Los Angeles Thursday afternoon. But the scene was still active as firefighters were engaged in an extended operation to locate smoldering debris in the burned-out building, said Nicholas Prange, an LAFD spokesperson. Intense heat from the blaze started a fire in one unit of a neighboring apartment building. Flames were seen coming from the three-story building when the first units arrived, according to the department. As one of the major hits of Jones' later career, it appears on numerous compilations of Jones' work. Remember, never to attempt to extinguish a serious house fire without professional help, and call your local fire department while you safely evacuate the scene.

Standing in the afternoon chill, the man, Max Azzarello, 37, of St. Augustine, Fla., threw pamphlets into the air before dousing himself with an accelerant and setting his body ablaze. The police hurried to extinguish the flames, and he was taken to a hospital burn unit, gravely injured. Candles, fireworks, decorative lighting on Christmas trees, matches, lighters and beyond can be culprits of dangerous fire accidents in and around your home without due diligence. Just like all open flames or combustible heat sources, these should never be unsupervised or unattended.

minutes, 30 seconds: Flashover!

Here are the top five causes of house fires and how to prevent them from happening to keep you and your home safe. When the smoky layer inches down to the top part of a doorway, an open window or a vent, it quickly streams out of the room. Then the poisonous smoke and heated air travels through hallways and up stairwells to the second floor. "Kickstart My Heart" is about all the ways Motley Crue gets their blood flowing without drugs. It was inspired by their bass player Nikki Sixx, who claimed he had to be revived with a shot of adrenaline to the heart after an overdose. "The program is studying solutions," the GAO said, noting that those included certain "aircraft design changes, lawn surface treatments, and operational procedural changes to minimize landing zone risks."

A Life Overtaken by Conspiracy Theories Explodes in Flames as the Public Looks On

Heat from the fire radiates to other parts of the kitchen, heating up tables, chairs, shelves, and cookbooks. If you’re still in the room, this hot, smoky air can instantly burn the inside of your breathing passages. Plus, fires generate highly poisonous gases, including carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide (created when insulation, carpets, clothing, and plastics burn). Electric Ladyland includes a cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower", which became the Experience's best-selling single, reaching number six in the UK and number 20 in the United States. Firefighters were initially pouring water onto the flames burning in a rubbish yard to the rear of a row of buildings with commercial businesses on the ground floor and residential units above. The track was released as the lead single from Reload on September 13, 1999, and became a hit across Europe and Australia, reaching No. 1 in Iceland, No. 2 in Sweden, and the top ten in Australia, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Norway and the United Kingdom.

According to Glenn Gaines, the Deputy U.S. Fire Administrator, fires kill more Americans each year than all natural disasters in the United States combined. And even if individuals are spared, fire can cost tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage—up to $50,000 to rebuild a kitchen engulfed in flames. It only takes 30 seconds for a small flame to turn into a full-blown life-threatening fire.

Heating

Candles should be placed on a non-flammable surface at least 12 inches away from other flammable items and kept away from playful children or accidental knocking over, and never left aflame while sleeping. Electrical distribution and lighting equipment are a leading cause of home structure fires and are often the result of inadequate, loose or faulty electrical connections. Short circuits, loose or sparking connections, poorly installed, old or overheated wires, circuits and lighting fixtures that are improperly matched to the current are all risk factors that could easily be missed by the untrained eye. Small grease fires may be extinguished with a fast response of turning off the heat, smothering the fire with a metal lid or sprinkling baking soda or salt on the flames.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience

The Electrical Safety Foundation reports that 65% of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no working smoke detectors. ESFI recommends smoke detectors should be installed on every level of the home, inside every bedroom and outside every sleeping area. Test your smoke detectors (and your carbon monoxide detectors simultaneously) at minimum twice per year, including replacing the batteries at each inspection, and replace any devices that are more than seven years old. House fires related to heating appliances can happen at any time, though they are unsurprisingly more common between November and March. Between 2015 and 2019, data from the NFPA shows that heating equipment resulted in the second leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries and was the third leading cause of home fire deaths and direct property damage. Portable cooking appliances that produce heat, including toasters and electric griddles, should also never be left unattended while in use.

If flames are visible from the outside when firefighters arrive, they immediately go into an aggressive attack strategy trying to ascertain if they can still safely save lives. Water simultaneously cools the burning debris (lower temps mean fewer flammable gases being generated) and can limit oxygen’s ability to fuel the fire. Firefighters may also vent off hot smoke and gases either by breaking open upstairs windows or cutting a hole in the roof. Spattered grease or oil residue on a dirty stovetop will ignite, causing flames to travel across the range.

Flames pour through the doorway into the neighboring living room, setting the carpet and upholstered furniture on fire. Synthetics like polyurethane and polyester foam in sofas, pillows and carpets release tremendous amounts of heat. Back in the kitchen, the blaze has penetrated the wall and ceiling and flames travel quickly through unseen structural vertical shafts in interior walls and horizontal shafts between floors. Welsh singer Tom Jones recorded a version of "Burning Down the House" with Swedish pop band the Cardigans for his 1999 collaborations album, Reload. In common with the other tracks on the album, the recording was made with the collaborators' choice of producer and studio, in this case Tore Johansson and Tambourine Studios in Malmö, Sweden.

The Government Accountability Office, a watchdog agency, noted in a June 2020 report on the matter that the military had "yet to demonstrate that it can meet the requirement to land on the White House South Lawn without causing damage." The rotors and engine exhaust from the Sikorsky-manufactured VH-92 Patriot will occasionally burn the grass when it lands, an issue that was initially identified in 2018, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday. A bulk of the fire was extinguished by 4 p.m., but firefighters were still there dousing hot spots. All 11 of the fires were set within a half-mile radius of one another in North Hollywood in a one-hour span. The house used in the video is located on Myrtle Street in Union, New Jersey. CLEVELAND, Ohio – Authorities arrested a second man Thursday in connection with burning down a home on Cleveland’s West Side. During the last meeting, Ghaben was asked whether he would preserve any historic artifacts from the house before the demolition. He said he would be willing to pull windows and doors and donate them, according to the village. On Wednesday, the village's Historic Preservation Commission is set to consider approval of the demolition of the house at 225 E. Four commercial units and the residential units above them sustained fire damage, according to LAFD.

What’s most alarming is that home fires have become more dangerous and devastating recently because of the flammability of the materials in the house. Thirty years ago, you had on average about 14 to 17 minutes to escape a house fire, according to Consumer Safety Director John Drengenberg of Underwriters Laboratories (UL). “Today, with the prevalence of synthetic materials in the home, occupants have roughly 2 to 3 minutes to get out,” said Drengenberg. Fire testing conducted by UL has found a home with mostly synthetic-based furnishings can be entirely engulfed in less than 4 minutes. In as little as 30 seconds a small flame can become a major fire that ravages a home and threatens the lives of the people inside.

Our house fire example starts on the stovetop since cooking fires account for almost half (44 percent) of all home fires. A few seconds is all it takes for a pot or pan to boil over the rim, spilling flammable oil-laden contents directly onto the cooking flame or red hot electric burner. In a few hundredths of a second, grease or other fatty substances ignite into flames. The flashpoint of many common cooking oils is around 600 degrees F, but when gas or electric burners are placed on high, temperatures can approach 1000 degrees F.

The single was backed with Jones' live recordings of the EMF song "Unbelievable" and the Beatles' "Come Together", as well as remixes of "Burning Down the House" by Delakota, Pepe Deluxé and DJ Scissorkicks. Fires from smoking also tend to be more deadly as they often ignite while the resident is asleep as the result of smoking in bed or on a sofa. Mattresses are highly flammable—and though many modern models come with flame retardant protections—it only takes a single stray ash to set ablaze blankets, clothing, carpet or other flammable fabrics to create devastating results. Whether or not your house will be livable after a major fire will depend on many factors, and you will need to obtain permission from the Fire Marshall to reenter your home. After a major fire, dry wall is left dehydrated and crumbling and will need to be replaced.

Outdoor cooking with grills, barbecues, grease friers, fire pits and wood stoves can all be a source of unwanted house fires as well. Be sure to position these tools away from the side of your home and nowhere near a wooden fence or any other highly combustible materials, and never leave them unattended while they are actively producing flames or heat. As the fire grows higher and hotter, more flammable objects and furnishings will ignite from spreading flames, including wooden cabinets and countertops, wallpaper, hanging baskets, and curtains. With the fire moving beyond the stovetop and other areas beginning to burn, a denser plume of hot air and smoke rises and spreads across the ceiling.

A White House official told Business Insider that the respective offices involved in the program "are working diligently to ensure a smooth, safe, and timely transition" from the current fleet of helicopters to the VH-92. The VH-92's lawn-scorching problems were first discovered in 2018 during the Trump administration, kick-starting an effort to resolve the issue. Because of this unrelenting problem, the new VH-92 is only carrying White House officials or Secret Service personnel instead of the president himself and is restricted to landing on paved surfaces, the report said.

The indictment names the 11 Republican electors, and the names of seven other defendants are redacted. Those individuals have not yet been served, but details in the indictment make clear they include top Trump aides, including Rudy Giuliani and Mark Meadows. Trump lost Arizona by just under 11,000 votes.

They have also drawn controversy for spreading false information, including about elections. In December, a Nevada grand jury indicted six Republicans on felony charges of offering a false instrument for filing and uttering a forged instrument in connection with false election certificates. Eleven people nominated as Arizona’s Republican electors in 2020 met in Phoenix that Dec. 14 to sign a certificate claiming that they were “duly elected and qualified” electors and that Trump had carried the state. A one-minute video of the signing ceremony was posted on social media by the Arizona Republican Party at the time. The document was later sent to Congress and the National Archives, where it was ignored.

Judge dismisses some charges against Trump in the Georgia 2020 election interference case

Four years later he went to work for GOP Congressman Andy Biggs' campaign, ultimately becoming deputy chief of staff. Pellegrino was subpoenaed by the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. She said in January 2022 the electors offered a contingency plan. He was fired a decade ago from the El Mirage Police Department in Phoenix's northwest suburbs for lying to a supervisor after a string of disciplinary issues and put on a roll of officers accused of dishonesty called the Brady list. Hoffman, of Queen Creek, is a state senator first elected to the Legislature in 2020.

She helped to organize the signing of the fake electors, sat at the head of the table during the "signing" video and boasted about the moment on Twitter, The Arizona Republic has previously reported. Kern has brushed off questions about the electors' case, saying he didn't need a lawyer. Last month, on the plaza outside a Maricopa County courthouse, Kern decried the investigation as a "weaponization of our government" that he said was motivated by an attempt to bankrupt him and keep him from Congress.

Another passage of the indictment appears to describe attorney Kenneth Chesebro, one of the planners of the alleged scheme, as an unindicted coconspirator. Chesebro pleaded guilty last year in Georgia to conspiracy charges brought against him, Trump and 17 other people in the state. He is also believed to be one of the unidentified co-conspirators special counsel Jack Smith described in his federal election interference indictment of Trump last year. Bowyer is the chief operating officer at Turning Point USA, a Phoenix-based nonprofit with a similarly named political advocacy arm.

Deeply reported insights into legislation, politics and policy from Sacramento, Washington and beyond. Democrats and legal experts warn how the lawsuits in multiple states might overwhelm election officials and undermine voter confidence in the balloting results. One of the eight lawsuits that unsuccessfully challenged the Democrat’s victory in the state was filed by the 11 Republicans who later signed the certificate declaring Trump the winner.

She is a former state lawmaker who twice ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. According to an online biography by Legistorm, Safsten worked as a field director in 2012 for then-Congressman Matt Salmon and then took on a role as a legislative assistant.

Safsten, who has worked as an adviser to several Republican congressmen from Arizona, was executive director of the Arizona Republican Party when he signed as a Trump elector. Pellegrino was secretary for the Arizona Trump electors and has a long history of leadership in state GOP politics. She has led two conservative groups, the Arizona Federation of Republican Women, and the Ahwatukee Republican Women's Club, and was a delegate to Republican National Committee conventions in 2012, 2016 and 2020. Eleven Republicans who signed documents falsely claiming that Donald Trump won the state in 2020 are facing criminal consequences in Arizona for the first time.

Michigan’s attorney general filed felony charges in July against 16 Republican fake electors on counts that included forgery and conspiracy to commit election forgery. Charges have been dropped against a defendant who reached a cooperation deal, and the remaining 15 have pleaded not guilty. In another election-related case brought by Mayes’ office, two Republican officials in a rural Arizona county who delayed canvassing the 2022 general election results face felony charges. A grand jury indicted Cochise County Supervisors Peggy Judd and Tom Crosby in November on one count each of conspiracy and interference with an election officer.

“The Republican electors put forth a valid document that said, in the event that the election certification was overturned, there would be no excuse not to recognize those electors,” Lamon said. He is the founder of Scottsdale-based Depcom Power, a solar engineering and construction company that employed 1,600 people across the nation before he sold the business. Lamon, a steady financial supporter of Republican causes and candidates, helped bankroll security for the Arizona Senate's much-criticized review of ballots cast in 2020.

Arizona fake electors: Who are the Republicans facing criminal charges?

There is no known criminal investigation in Wisconsin. Last fall, Mayes charged two local officials who delayed the certification of midterm election results in 2022 in Cochise County. The officials voted against certifying the county’s election results by the statutory deadline after they aired baseless accusations about the integrity of the election for months.

Bowyer is a committeeman for the Republican National Committee. He told The Arizona Republic in 2022 about the so-called fake elector plot, that he didn't know "all the details and facts" but confirmed he was an elector for the state GOP. Most homes have some risk of natural disasters, and may be impacted by climate change due to rising temperatures and sea levels. "Israel is literally dominating in their war with Hamas after being brutally attacked killing thousands of innocent people, and not one single American dollar has been spent on that war yet. Just think about that," she wrote on X. "She has, in very little time, undermined the influence of her party's entire right flank, driving less unhinged Republicans—most notably the House speaker, Mike Johnson—to brush back her and her ilk like the poo-flinging chaos monkeys they are." Trump placed a phone call directly to Ducey as the governor certified the state’s election results.

Giuliani ordered to pay former Georgia election workers $148 million

Those charged in Arizona on Wednesday include Kelli Ward, a former state GOP chair and failed U.S. Senate candidate; state Sen. Jake Hoffman; Tyler Bowyer, a Turning Point USA executive who serves on the Republican National Committee; state Sen. Anthony Kern, who was photographed in restricted areas outside the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack and is now a U.S. House candidate; Greg Safsten, former executive director of the state GOP; and energy executive James Lamon, another unsuccessful U.S. In Arizona, Mayes’ predecessor, Republican Mark Brnovich, had conducted an investigation into the 2020 election, but the fake elector allegations were not part of that examination, according to Mayes’ office. In Wisconsin, 10 Republicans who posed as electors settled a civil lawsuit, admitting their actions were part of an effort to overturn Biden’s victory.

It's Time to Act Against Antisemitic Behavior on Campus

"We conducted a thorough and professional investigation over the past 13 months into the fake electors scheme in our state," Mayes said in a video announcing the charges. "I understand for some of you today didn't come fast enough. And I know I'll be criticized by others for conducting this investigation at all. But as I've stated before, and we'll say here again, today, I will not allow American democracy to be undermined." He announced earlier this year he would run to represent Arizona on the Republican National Committee, and he is seeking another term representing Legislative District 15 in the Arizona Senate, which includes Queen Creek, San Tan Valley and a portion of Mesa. He runs or has ownership shares of several marketing and advertising businesses, including one that was exposed years ago as a social media "troll farm" that spread disinformation. These are the 11 Arizonans who signed documents claiming to be legitimate electors for Trump, though Democrat Joe Biden won Arizona's votes in the electoral college. The Arizona charges come after a string of indictments against fake electors in other states.

An Arizona grand jury has indicted Mark Meadows, who served as former President Trump’s chief of staff, and former Trump lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani along with 16 others in an election interference case. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat, led the investigation. She won her election to be the state’s chief prosecutor in November 2022, replacing Republican Mark Brnovich, a onetime ally of Trump who later earned his scorn for not substantiating his claims of election fraud in the state. The state Republican Party documented the signing of the certificate in a social media post and sent it to Congress and the National Archives. One is described as an attorney “often identified as the Mayor” who spread false allegations of election fraud, a description that clearly describes former New York Mayor Giuliani. Another is described as Trump’s “chief of staff in 2020,” a clear reference to Meadows.

Trump was also indicted in federal court in August over the fake electors scheme. Three fake electors are among those charged in Georgia alongside Trump and others in a sweeping indictment accusing the defendants of participating in a wide-ranging scheme to illegally overturn the state’s results. A state grand jury on Wednesday issued an indictment in which the electors are each charged with nine criminal counts, including conspiracy, fraudulent schemes and artifices, fraudulent schemes and practices, and six counts of forgery.

The indictment released Wednesday names 11 Republicans who submitted a document to Congress falsely declaring that Trump had beaten Joe Biden in Arizona in the 2020 presidential election. The names of seven other defendants were not immediately released because they had not yet been served with the charges. Arizona was one of seven states where “alternate electors” signed paperwork falsely claiming Trump had won the states. Prosecutors have already charged “alternate electors” in Nevada, Georgia and Michigan. Gen. Raúl Torrez said that state’s five Republican electors could not be prosecuted under the current law. Fake electors there and in Pennsylvania had added caveats to their election certificates, saying the submissions were in case they were later recognized as duly elected, qualified electors.

As the Republican electors sent illegitimate certifications to Washington, Trump sought to put pressure on Maricopa County officials and other Arizona Republicans, including then-state House Speaker Rusty Bowers and then-Gov. A well-known GOP activist, Michael Ward was subpoenaed by the Department of Justice in its investigation of Trump's election interference. He has been married to Kelli Ward since 1995 and has served as her campaign manager in bids for the Arizona Legislature.

Bestselling author Stephen King has continued to share other people's withering descriptions of Rep. Mayes’ term as Arizona attorney general has been marked by other election cases stemming from Trump’s false claims about fraud in the 2020 election and after. In 2022, Lamon claimed during an interview with KTVK-TV in Phoenix that the electors were part of a backup plan in case Trump's election fraud claims proved successful.

Moorhead was the second vice chair of the Gila County Republican Party when he signed as a Trump elector, a ranking but not top position in the local Republican Party in one of Arizona's rural counties northeast of metro Phoenix. Montgomery is a former head of the Cochise County Republican Committee. He led GOP leadership in Arizona's rural southeast corner until he was defeated by a surprise challenger in December 2022. Montgomery has supported hand-counting ballots and pushed county leaders to ignore warnings about doing so before the 2022 election.

Cottle has served on the Arizona GOP Executive Committee and Maricopa County Republican Committee. She led the Pledge of Allegiance at a rally for former President Donald Trump in January 2022 in Florence, Ariz.

The county certified its election results only after a court ordered it to do so. The Arizona charges are the latest example of Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election sprouting into legal cases during his 2024 bid to retake office. Ward was also subpoenaed by the Jan. 6 committee related to the elector scheme and exercised her Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate herself more than 200 times when later testifying before that committee. Kelli Ward is a past chair of the Arizona GOP.

Norovirus Outbreaks Surge on Cruise Ships Amid Industry Rebound

norovirus on cruise ships

During its June 6 to June 20 voyage, 110 of the ship’s 838 passengers, or 13.1 percent, were infected. The bug thrives in crowded conditions and is spread through food and by touching contaminated surfaces. The easiest way to avoid the ailment is to wash your hands with soap and water after using the bathroom, before eating and after touching surfaces touched by others.

As the Cruise Industry Makes a Comeback, Norovirus Outbreaks Are on the Rise

The following "health advisory" list of recommended actions is often issued during gastrointestinal illness outbreak or on embarkation day (of the next scheduled voyage). It has important suggestions on how to avoid spreading the cruise ship virus infection. CruiseMapper's Norovirus survey is based on official data from CDC.gov (USA's "Centers for Disease Control and Prevention"). CDC's "Vessel Sanitation Program" assists the cruise tourism industry in preventing and controlling the transmission and spread of gastrointestinal illnesses (Norovirus, ETEC) on passenger ships calling on US seaports. If you feel ill from Norovirus while on a cruise ship, visit the ship's doctor.

Norovirus Cases Surging on Cruise Ships, What are the Signs and Symptoms

This step helps them minimize the risk of spreading the disease to others. Some people find getting tested for norovirus embarrassing, while others only have stomach virus symptoms for a few days and do not seek medical care during that time. In April 2023, a multistate norovirus outbreak was linked to raw oysters from Texas, according to the CDC.

norovirus on cruise ships

When was the most recent norovirus outbreak on a cruise ship?

This alarming number marks the highest incidence of such outbreaks since 2012 when there were 16 across eight lines over the entire year. The allure of the open sea, captivating itineraries, and the luxurious promise of a carefree escape have long made cruising a popular choice for vacationers. However, this industry’s lustrous appeal has recently been overshadowed by a surge in outbreaks of a particularly stubborn and contagious pathogen — Norovirus. Most vessels have received scores in the high 90s — only one cruise ship, the MSC Seaside, has failed the CDC's sanitation inspection so far this year.

The disinfecting product and technology were developed by the Danish company ACT Global AS (Copenhagen). The spray is chemical-free, odourless, transparent and can be applied to all surfaces. Some cruise lines offer hand-sanitizer dispensers near the ship's restaurants, Lido/pool deck areas and other more crowded public spaces in their effort to keep a lid on sickness outbreaks. Quarantining the ill passengers and crew to their cabins is mandatory (at least for 48 hours) to slow the outbreak's spread.

Norovirus Cases Are Rising on Cruises. Here’s How You Can Stay Safe

Stick to bottled water, and don't share drinking glasses and eating utensils. We'll be in your inbox every morning Monday-Saturday with all the day’s top business news, inspiring stories, best advice and exclusive reporting from Entrepreneur. An MSC Cruises representative told Insider at the time that the cruise line had launched an internal investigation based on the inspector's concerns and taken immediate corrective actions. Norovirus is very contagious, but you can take steps to stop it from spreading. Symptoms usually last one to three days and most people recover, according to the Mayo Clinic. So if you're planning to set sail this summer, here's everything you need to know about the norovirus.

On ships where outbreaks occur, the crew conducts a deep cleaning of the ship after passengers have disembarked and before the next sailing begins. In cases where outbreaks are particularly severe, subsequent sailings could be canceled to allow for more thorough sanitization. "The opportunities for close person-to-person spread are so intense on a cruise ship that once this virus is introduced into that population, it has many, many opportunities to spread," Schaffner warned. Even when compared to pre-pandemic levels, the number of outbreaks in 2019 was eight for the entire year — a figure that 2023 has already surpassed with five months still remaining.

In 2016, the number of reported illness outbreaks on cruise ships was 23. The total number of infected was 2504 (of those 2378 passengers and 126 crew). In 2017, the number of reported illness outbreaks on cruise ships was 21. The total number of infected was 2535 (of those 2450 passengers and 85 crew).

Norovirus Cases On Cruise Ships Skyrocket: Here’s Why—And How To Avoid Getting Sick.

A total of 130 crew had gotten sick on those voyages and didn't report their illness in the required time period. The threat of norovirus on cruise ships is a serious issue that has both health and economic impacts. The confined environment of a cruise ship, combined with the virus’s highly contagious nature, creates a significant challenge. It’s crucial for cruise lines, passengers, and health officials to remain vigilant, proactive, and informed to prevent and contain potential norovirus outbreaks.

norovirus on cruise ships

During that time frame, approximately 127 million passengers sailed on the 252 cruise ships under VSP jurisdiction. Of those 127 million cruisers, 26,450 reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness while on board. It sounds like a large number, but it amounts to just 0.02% (two one-hundredths of one percent) of cruisers throughout those 14 years, with the total number of cases decreasing from 4,507 in 2006 to 1,201 in 2019. Hand hygiene is key to prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus — but the way you clean your hands matters, experts note. It has to be with soap and water, because alcohol-based hand sanitizers are not effective against norovirus.

Though generally moderate, symptoms are often flu-like (in fact, Norovirus is often called the "stomach flu," even though it is not related to influenza). Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps; children often vomit more than adults. Infected passengers who don't wash their hands after coughing, sneezing or using the restroom are the reason those surfaces become contaminated in the first place. An excessive number of news reports exist for norovirus cases on ships, making it seem to the unsuspecting public that cruise vessels are dirty or you're likely to get sick if you sail.

You might also hear it generically called a stomach bug or the stomach flu despite the fact that noroviruses are not the same as flu viruses. Such viral/bacterial outbreak incidents affect the vacation experience of thousands of people, being packed up in a floating resort for many days on end. In confined spaces with frequent passenger turnover (like big capacity cruise ships), it is easy for diseases to spread - whether food- or air-borne, or otherwise. The following statistics show the number of cruise ship illness outbreaks in recent years. You can compare the number of reports (CDC and news media sources) and the total number of infected (passengers and crew). Norovirus spreads easily in close quarters, such as those found on cruise ships.

While this virus tends to be short-lived, treatment is based on symptomatic care. And recent data from the CDC has noted that over 15% of norovirus tests are coming back positive. Surfaces or objects that are contaminated with norovirus can be cleaned with a high-level disinfectant like bleach, per Ostrosky. Attacking a hospital ship is considered a war crime, but enemy forces have the right to board them for inspections. Seasickness is physical disorientation as a result of conflicting signals received by the brain from different body senses. Our inner ear senses the ship's irregular motion, which our eyes can't see because the floor and walls are stable.

The most effective way to prevent norovirus on a cruise is with regular and thorough handwashing. It is particularly important that you do this after using the bathroom and before and after eating, drinking or smoking. As the world emerges from the pandemic, the cruise industry is experiencing a resurgence in demand.

The most exciting new cruise ships of 2023

All this, plus the best included thermal spa at sea and sleek Scandinavian decor make Viking Saturn a great choice for adults -- the line doesn't accept passengers under who love learning and enrichment, in a sophisticated environment. The 6,334-passenger ship will be powered by liquid natural gas and be the third in the line's Meraviglia-Plus Class. While details on the ship are still light, expect it to resemble sibling ships MSC Grandiosa and MSC Virtuosa. Following on the heels of 2021's Carnival Mardi Gras and 2022's Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee will debut in Galveston in December 2023 and instantly become the biggest Carnival ship in the Texas port. Seven Seas Grandeur will also offer an array of elegant and high-end restaurants, all of which are included in the fare. Silver Nova's asymmetrical design will also be evident at two new food and beverage venues at the top of the vessel.

That said, there are still a few new features that give long-time Disney Cruise Line fans plenty to look forward to. Icon of the Seas, once it debuts in 2024, will be the largest cruise ship in the entire world, surpassing the prior largest cruise ship, also from Royal Caribbean, Wonder of the Seas. Avalon is bringing its style of river cruise ship to Portugal's Douro River in 2024, with the 102-passenger Avalon Alegria. The ship will have Avalon's signature Panorama Suites, where the bed faces the river. A new immersive restaurant, centered around the concept of being on a train, is being developed. What's also unique for the ship is that it will focus on short three- and four-day itineraries from its Port Canaveral homeport -- meaning you'll never be able to see it all in one trip.

Silver Dawn

Disney is opening its second cruise ship-focused Bahamian island in June 2024, Lighthouse Point, to cruisers, so Disney Treasure guests will have that new experience to look forward to as well. Additionally, expect two pools, multiple wellness offerings and high-end staterooms and suites that channel the feel of an elegant European hotel. Fans of the Cunard Line have been waiting a long while for the Queen Anne cruise ship, which will follow in the footsteps of the line’s iconic Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth ships. The unique Bow Lounge is another new space, offering up commanding forward-facing views and interactive screens that display much of the vessel's navigational data.

Avalon Adds a New Ship in Portugal

Virgin Voyages debut ship, Scarlet Lady, came this close to entering revenue service before the coronavirus pandemic. Cruise Critic even had a preview of the ship in Southampton prior to its journey across the Atlantic to its homeport of Miami. Icon will feature the largest waterpark at sea, with six record-breaking slides. All new liners feature next-generation designs and marine architecture and technologies, each designed accordingly to the brand it serves (Costa, AIDA, Princess, Holland America, CCL-Carnival). Icon of the Seas has plenty of live music venues — including rowdy karaoke and dueling pianos bars, if that counts.

Royal Caribbean Utopia of the Seas

New features on this ship are minimal, as Viking Cruises has long attempted to keep its experiences similar across its ships, for guest experience continuity. Accordingly, expect the same decor and design, as well as restaurants and entertainment, that you might’ve already experienced on past Viking cruises. Other new features include a new Asian and sushi restaurant, and a new smoke-free casino with an attached dance club. A previous feature on the cruise line’s ships, the Champagner Treff Champagne bar, gets a new look for better views. Other amenities include a running track, gym, spa, sports court, climbing wall, and one pool. Following a successful launch in 2023, Explora Journeys will launch its second luxury ship, the 922-passenger Explora II, in August 2024.

Each and every year, we cover the biggest and best new cruise ships that you can look forward to in the year ahead (and that you can, in some cases, already book for your next cruise!). And, each and every year, we’re amazed at how the cruise industry continues to take the cruising experience to the next level. The first of two polar ice-class vessels, Minerva is named after the much-beloved Minerva of the former Swan Hellenic, which went bankrupt in 2017. This new iteration, though, will provide the British heritage beloved by the line's past passengers while adding new features and amenities to appeal to today's cruiser. There’ll be over 29 bars and restaurants, 1,500 balcony cabins, and sun-lit terraces on the bow and stern of the ship overlooking the ocean, with an infinity pool and lots of places to relax.

Carnival Jubilee

During its maiden season, the U.S.-built cruise ship is set to offer a series of itineraries in New England and the Hudson River. Closing out Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class, the Utopia of the Seas is set to welcome guests for its inaugural cruise on July 22, 2024. In a first for the company, the LNG-powered newbuild will spend its maiden season offering short cruises to the Bahamas departing from Port Canaveral. While slightly bigger than earlier Viking ocean ships, Viking Vela's interior will have an almost identical look.

The third Icon-class vessel has been ordered, with a delivery date set for Spring 2026. Richard Branson’s adults-only (18+) cruise line will launch its fourth “Lady Ship” sometime in 2024 (the ship was delayed from its original launch date of late 2023) or in early 2025. For all riverboats tracked at CruiseMapper, you can visit our River Cruises hub where are listed all river shipping companies and their fleets. In March 2015 Carnival Corporation ordered 9 vessels to be built by two different companies. Fincantieri SpA (Italy) constructs 5 units (at Monfalcone and Marghera yards), while Meyer Werft BmbH constructs the other 4 units in Germany (Papenburg) and Finland (Turku).

The Cabana stateroom boasts a private cabana and balcony, allowing you to relish the outdoors while preserving your privacy. We’re also excited by the itineraries that Emerald Azzurra will sail, which include its debut in the Red Sea in January 2022. The yacht will then move to the Mediterranean and sail into small Croatian and Greek ports, as well as itineraries that focus on Italy and France.

The line has a second new ship, the 4,810-passenger MSC Euribia, too, which will debut later in 2023 — in June, if all goes according to plan. At around 182,000 tons, it won't be quite as big as MSC World Europa but will still be one of the biggest cruise vessels in the world. Like the Oasis-class ships, it's able to hold nearly 7,000 passengers with all berths filled — 6,762, to be exact. Among the most notable of these smaller vessels is the 60-passenger AmaMagdalena, which is being billed as the first major river ship designed to sail on the Magdalena River in Colombia. Avalon's new entry for 2024, the 102-passenger Avalon Alegria, will be that line's first vessel on the Douro River in Portugal.

Passengers floating in the pools on these ships or lounging on nearby lounge chairs get an unobstructed view of the sea off the starboard side. Wellness-focused areas will include a new-for-the-line, glass-enclosed Wellness Studio at the top of the ship that will offer classes in yoga, pilates, Zumba and line dancing during the day and ballroom dancing classes at sunset. Among other standout venues, Sun Princess will feature a secret hideaway for magical performances designed in partnership with the Magic Castle performance venue in Los Angeles. Kids should love the new-for-Princess fun zone called Park19, featuring a ropes course and what's being billed as the first roll glider at sea, an electric ride that goes up to 11 mph.

Sun Princess initially will sail in Europe through the fall before repositioning to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for voyages to the Caribbean. Fares start at $467 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a five-night Caribbean sailing. Sun Princess will also be the first Princess ship with suites that come with exclusive access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck — a sign Princess is finally getting serious about pampering its best customers. In size, Icon of the Seas will be about 6% bigger than the biggest of the Oasis Class ships, the one-year-old Wonder of the Seas. But it'll be able to hold about 7% more people — 7,600 passengers as compared to Wonder of the Seas' total capacity of 7,084 passengers. To whet your appetite for cruising in the year ahead, take a look at our list of nine new cruise ships arriving in 2024.
