We always recommend you bring a tremendous packable down jacketon any hiking trip. With that in mind, they keep you warm in cool weather, but the breathability of the pants keeps you cool in hot weather. They also have a lot of water resistance and are more comfortable than a pair of rain pants.

The Moab 2 operates more as an easy trail boot than something designed for scrambling or traversing craggy trails. If you spend a lot of time in rough areas with lots of scree and rock, you may want a more robust hiking boot. I’ve always opted for nice compression shorts or lightweight underwear from Icebreaker.

Unless I am hiking in leggings, I need a belt to secure my pants. Hiking sandals can be so incredibly nice for freeing your feet. Whether it’s an easy hike or you’re just walking around camp it’s great to walk around in a pair of Teva’s or Chacos.

Ensure you protect your eyes from the sun when you spend all day in the sun. There are a lot of options for sunglasses, and everyone should own at least a pair. It’s best to ensure they have UV protection for the health of your eyes. You will want to keep your feet dry while walking around. In cold weather, I will take several different hats with me.

I am hard on my shoes, and hike most often over very rocky terrain. These shoes are made with a 5mm thick nubuck leather upper, and the Vibram outsole is super tough. Also, a key item to take with you if there is any chance at extended precipitation in cool weather. Look for pants that have a 3-layer GORE-TEX Paclite laminate. When it comes to fleece jackets, I am not super picky.
Slip into a casual tee shirt along with black shorts and pair them up with running shoes. I love that I can pack the jacket into its pocket for an easy fit, in a small trail running pack or hang off a climbing harness. The jacket has excellent mobility, breathability, wind resistance, and durability, making it a standout for hiking. This softshell is good for lightweight hikers who demand a durable piece of clothing.

The front zipper is excellent as it’s effective for temperature management or throwing on over a helmet. It all together forms a jacket that doesn’t leave a lot of desires. I don’t bring this on all my hikes, but it is surely appreciated when I do. A pad can serve many purposes like a back rest, pillow, cooking surface, or a place to change your clothes. They are light, though, so make sure they don’t blow away. It’s best to keep them inside your pack instead of outside on a windy day.
